Coinbase Balances Meme Coin Popularity with Conservative Listing Strategy

Coinbase has added 34 tokens to its listing roadmap in 2024, with meme coins making up over 20% of the total. This trend highlights the exchange’s cautious yet deliberate approach amid the growing popularity of meme-based cryptocurrencies.

As a publicly traded company, Coinbase has adopted a measured strategy compared to its competitors, focusing on high-market-cap meme coins and preferring Ethereum (ETH) and Base (BASE) networks over Solana (SOL) or BNB Chain (formerly Binance Smart Chain).

On Dec. 10, an on-chain analyst using the alias “ai_9684xtpa” shared insights on X, revealing that seven of the 34 tokens Coinbase added this year are meme coins, accounting for 20.58% of the listings. Notably, 71% of these meme coins have market values exceeding $500 million, indicating Coinbase’s focus on more established assets.

The uptick in meme coin listings on Coinbase aligns with a broader surge in interest around “dog coins” and other meme-inspired tokens. This trend mirrors activity on Binance, which has added 14 meme coins since October.

Selective Network Focus

While both Coinbase and Binance experienced a spike in meme coin activity, Coinbase has demonstrated a selective approach to network distribution. According to the analyst, 57% of meme coins listed on Coinbase are built on Ethereum, while Solana and Coinbase’s layer-2 network, Base, each account for 28.6%.

In contrast, Binance favors Solana, with over 60% of its meme coin listings tied to the network. This divergence in network preference underscores Coinbase’s conservative strategy, emphasizing Ethereum-based assets and its proprietary blockchain.

Delayed Listings for Risk Mitigation

Another notable aspect of Coinbase’s strategy is its cautious timing. Meme coins listed on Coinbase typically appear at least a month after their addition on Binance, reflecting the platform’s deliberate evaluation process.

This cautious approach aims to balance the growing demand for meme coins with the need to maintain a robust and secure listing framework, reinforcing Coinbase’s reputation as a more conservative exchange.

The exchange’s strategy highlights its commitment to navigating the meme coin trend responsibly, focusing on quality over quantity while expanding its offerings to meet evolving market demands.
