CZ Teases Idea of a Meme Coin Based on His Dog

Former Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao is contemplating a proposal from the crypto community to turn his pet dog into a meme coin.

On February 13, CZ engaged with several crypto traders on X (formerly Twitter) who asked for his dog’s name and photo. He revealed that his pet is a Belgian Malinois and expressed curiosity about how meme coin transformations work, questioning how to determine an “official” version of such a coin.

After receiving multiple explanations from traders, CZ responded in a follow-up post:
“Got the answers now. Pretty interesting how things work. Will mull it over for a day or so, as usual for big decisions.”

Meme Coins and the Crypto Community’s Obsession

CZ joked that he needed time to consider his dog’s “privacy” in case traders decided to “dox the dog for the cause.” He later confirmed that he had started interacting with some of the meme coins launched on the BNB Chain.

The crypto community has a history of creating meme coins based on pets of influential figures in the industry. For example, the late cryptographer Len Sassaman’s cats, Sasha and Odin, inspired meme coins due to speculation that Sassaman was Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto a theory popularized by an HBO documentary.

Similarly, a past post from Elon Musk, in which he shared a picture of a Shiba Inu and mentioned naming it “Floki,” led to the creation of the FLOKI meme coin, featuring the image from Musk’s post.

Did CZ Change His Stance on Meme Coins?

Some users questioned CZ’s newfound interest in meme coins, citing a November 2024 post where he called meme coins “a little weird” and suggested the community should focus on developing real blockchain applications instead of embracing meme tokens.

Responding to one of these posts, CZ clarified that he had been referring to the “crazy live streams” associated with meme coin launchpad pump.fun, which faced backlash for promoting inappropriate content. The controversy grew so severe that the platform eventually suspended its livestream pool.

Meme Coins Continue to Surge in Popularity

Throughout 2024, meme coins have become a dominant force in the crypto space. Even the President of the United States has launched an official meme coin, further solidifying their mainstream appeal. The total market cap for meme coins has skyrocketed to nearly $78 billion, reflecting a 2.7% increase.

As meme coins continue to thrive, the question remains will CZ’s dog become the next big sensation in the crypto world
