DEBT Box decision prompts SEC Regional Office Shutdown

The SEC’s Salt Lake City office, notable for its failed litigation against DEBT Box, is set to close. This decision follows a significant reduction in its workforce, including key departures linked to the DEBT Box case.

With this closure, the SEC will reduce its regional branches from 11 to 10. In a June 4 notice, the SEC announced that the Salt Lake City office, its least-staffed location, had recently experienced substantial employee attrition.

SEC Cites ‘Efficiency’ for Salt Lake Office Closure After Staff Departures

Two SEC lawyers, Michael Welsh and Joseph Watkins, resigned in April following severe criticism from a federal judge, who accused the SEC of “gross abuse of power” by using false information to freeze the assets of Utah-based DEBT Box. It’s unclear if their resignations directly contributed to the office’s significant attrition.

The SEC stated, “The agency considered its budget and organizational efficiency in deciding to close the office, and it has no plans to close any other regional offices. All current staff will be aligned to existing SEC organizational components based on their current functions and agency mission needs.”

Judge Fines SEC $1.8M in DEBT Box Case

In July 2023, the SEC filed a lawsuit against DEBT Box, alleging the company ran a $49 million fraud. DEBT Box was accused of selling “node licenses” promising profits from mining various cryptocurrencies, which were allegedly never mined.

Last week, the case concluded with a significant setback for the SEC. The judge dismissed the case and fined the SEC over $1.8 million for unethical tactics, revealing that the SEC had misled the court to gain an unfair advantage.

Moving forward, the SEC will manage Utah enforcement matters from its Denver office. The oversight for Utah was already transferred to Denver years ago, so businesses in Utah are not expected to experience any disruption in regulatory oversight, according to the notice.
