Fee-Free Future: Immutable's zkEVM targets gas charges in Web3 gaming

Immutable, a Web3 gaming firm, is set to revolutionize the gaming experience by eliminating gas fees for users with its upcoming zkEVM scaling platform. Expected to go live in early 2024, Immutable’s zero-knowledge proof-based (ZK-proofs) technology aims to create a seamless and fee-free onboarding experience for gamers.

Traditionally, Web3 games built on blockchain protocols required users to pay gas fees to network validators, acting as a significant barrier to mainstream gaming adoption. Immutable’s zkEVM addresses this issue by enabling blockchain-based game developers to remove transaction fees for end users, ensuring a familiar and streamlined user experience.

Alex Connolly, the Chief Technology Officer at Immutable, emphasized the importance of eliminating gas fees for mainstream players, stating, “There are a couple of norms in the blockchain space that mainstream players simply won’t accept — gas fees fall into that category.” The move aims to enhance the integration of digital asset ownership into games, making Web3 gaming more attractive to a broader audience.

Immutable plans to sponsor gas fee payments for Immutable Passport users, effectively canceling out these transactions. During its mainnet launch, the company also intends to cover gas fees for all games within its ecosystem for a limited period. Game studios, which typically incur significant gas fees, are expected to benefit from increased player adoption and revenues through this initiative.

Immutable’s zkEVM is designed to offer game developers lower development costs, along with the security and network effects associated with the Ethereum ecosystem. More than 20 gaming studios, including GameStop, TokenTrove, Kongregate, and iLogos, have pledged their support for the beta launch, highlighting the industry’s interest in this innovative approach to Web3 gaming.
